2009 Cardiff

The 2009 Encinitas Garden Festival & Tour highlighted the wonderful beach community of Cardiff-by-the-Sea. The Marketplace was located at Cardiff Elementary School with its thriving school garden. From there, tour goers set out on foot to visit mostly small and very personal gardens spread out over Cardiff’s winding and hilly neighborhoods. It was a challenging walk for the intrepid tour attendees, but by all accounts worth every huff and puff.

Gardens reflected a distinct beach lifestyle, complete with daily attention to the sunset, as well as plants that thrived in the moist coastal air. One garden, for example, spanned Rossini Canyon with plantings on both sides connected by a Swiss Family Robinson-type bridge. Another historic property featured a decades old avocado and citrus orchard, a remnant of the neighborhood’s agricultural past. Still another was a lovingly restored beach bungalow with elegant succulent plantings.
