2008 Olivenhain Gardens

In 2008, the Encinitas Garden Festival & Tour vis­ited Olivenhain, where prop­er­ties are a lit­tle larger, and res­i­dents enjoy an inland micro­cli­mate cooled by ocean breezes com­ing up the river val­ley. The Marketplace was held on the grounds of the his­toric Olivenhain Meeting Hall, built around 1895, by the community’s orig­i­nal German settlers.

Tour goers strolled down a mile long route that felt like a coun­try road. Along the way, they vis­ited gar­dens that ranged from 10-acre horse prop­erty to a lovely court­yard gar­den, a water­wise sanc­tu­ary to a grassy, shaded yard whose large pond is fre­quented by the abun­dant vari­ety of native birds.
